NCR ANNOUNCES EARLY-RETIREMENT PROGRAM FOR EMPLOYEES IN THE UNITED STATES

DAYTON, Ohio, Oct. 1 /PRNwswire/ -- NCR Corporation announced today an early retirement program for its employees in the United States. Under the program, NCR people who are 50 years old and have 10 years of service as of Dec. 31, 1993, will receive a package of enhanced benefits if they notify NCR between Nov. 1, 1993, and Dec. 17, 1993, of their intent to retire effective Jan. 1, 1994.
Of the approximately 27,000 people employed by NCR in the U.S., about 5,500 are eligible for the program.
The benefit package includes the addition of five years to employees' ages for the purpose of calculating pension eligibility, no actuarial reduction in pension benefits due to early retirement, and a lump sum cash payment of $30,000. In almost all cases, health care insurance will be provided as part of the package.
To assist eligible employees in making retirement decisions, NCR has put in place a comprehensive support program. This includes detailed information packages for each eligible employee and telephone hotlines for fast response to employee questions about financial planning, health insurance and pension calculations.
"Our commitment is to continually improve our responsiveness with our customers," said NCR Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Jerre L. Stead. "This will require a new mix of skills and fewer people. The early retirement program is a way to address this requirement within our Common Bond values which include respect for the individual and teamwork.
"Our focus is on getting closer to the customer. We are doing this through teaming which directly links our people with our customers. This will allow us to be more responsive and efficient in meeting customer needs."
