NCR AND SCANNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS JOIN FORCES TO WIN BID
FOR ARMY & AIR FORCE EXCHANGES RETAIL POINT-OF-SALE SYSTEM
CANOGA PARK, Calif., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- NCR Corp./AT&T and Scanning Management Systems (Scanning) have teamed together to win the bid to supply the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), headquartered in Dallas, a common Retail Point-of-Sale (RPOS) solution that will preserve AAFES' investment in installed technology while allowing the integration of newer technologies within a single system.
The NCR solution, which approximates $7.8 million, will preserve the customer's investment in equipment, training and operations by allowing existing NCR 1255s and store devices to continue to operate much as they have been in the past. However, the enhanced system features in the NCR solution will increase the functionality of the point-of-sale operations and productivity, control and accountability in AAFES store operations in nearly 200 exchanges located throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
AAFES will commence installing the new NCR/Scanning system in their largest exchanges during the summer of 1992, and expects installation activity to continue throughout 1993.
Some of the important features of the package that NCR has developed for AAFES include: an open architecture system based on industry- standard computing and communication interfaces with applications that utilize high-performance 386 and 486 processors operating under UNIX System V. Release 4.0 and FlexOS multi-tasking, multi-user systems.
The non-proprietary hardware and Scanning's POS Plus (tm) controller and application software offerings which include their POS Plus (tm) NCR Controller Replacement, POS Plus (tm) In-Store Management, and POS Plus (tm) Cash Management, also allow for maximum support of other devices such as IBM-compatible PCs, VDTs and hand-held radio frequency devices, and provide AAFES flexibility to incorporate new technologies and enhanced functionality, now and in the future.
George Luntz, chief operating officer of Scanning Management Systems in Canoga Park, said, "Both NCR and Scanning have extensive experience in serving the retail industry and in working with customers to develop, customize and implement systems tailored to meet specific and sometimes quite unique needs and requirements. We feel this merger of our combined knowledge which provides AAFES integrated software, hardware and the necessary support processes, also allows them to continue daily operations and transition to the standards and technologies of the future."
The new system will provide expanded capabilities over AAFES' present system in a number of areas including more checker/operators per store, more POS terminals per store, expanded sales reporting categories, expansion of the merchandise item files to allow for color and size information, and expanded sales history files. The system will also give AAFES many new customer service features including a computerized layaway system that has more efficient refund procedures.
Initially as many as eight companies were competing for the program award. The award was based on technical merit of the proposed system as the major evaluation criteria, with price a secondary criteria.
