NCI ANNOUNCES PLANT EXPANSION

HOUSTON, April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- NCI Building Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: BLDG) announced today that a major plant expansion is now under way at its Houston, Texas facility. According to Bob Medlock, the expansion project began immediately after NCI successfully negotiated an accelerated buyout of its lease-purchase agreement with American Buildings Co. and industry competitor. The property, equipment and trade names (Metallic Building Company and Midwest Steel Building Company) were purchased from American Buildings Co. for $5 million in a cash transaction of which $300,000 was paid in 1989. No financing was undertaken at this time by NCI, with the purchase being made with cash on hand.
The expansion in Houston consists of a 23,750 square foot manufacturing facility to accommodate a second complete structural frame fabrication line including Conrac welder, shear, fitting, welding and painting equipment. Also included is the construction of a 12,500 square foot expansion for warehouse use in addition to a new research and testing area. The company recently began construction of a 7,200 square foot office addition also located at the Houston site. These expansions will be augmented by additional truck parking areas with paved surfaces and covered storage for finished loads to improve the product quality leaving the facility.
These Houston projects came after NCI's successful expansion of its Caryville, Tenn. plant that was completed in March of 1993. These capacity increases will enable NCI to meet the demand of its rapidly growing customer base. The company principally markets its products through A&S Building Systems, Metallic Building Company, Midwest Steel Building Company, Architectural Roof Systems and NCI Components Company. The company is publicly owned, traded on the NASDAQ exchange under the symbol BLDG.
