NCD FINALLY RELEASES NCDWARE 5.1.

Network Computing Devices Inc has upgraded its NCDware embedded operating system that is used in its Explora and HMX X terminal product lines. The upgrade comes more than a year after the 5.0 release. NCDware resides on the server and is downloaded to clie nts when they boot. Although the Mountain View, California- based company claims there are a host of new features this time round, some of them, including fundamentals such as a Java virtual machine and Citrix ICA client were announced with 5.0 in September 1997 (09/30/97). What does appear to be new this time is 16/24 bits per pixel color support, which is said to enable users to work from multiple windows simultaneously without color map flash. The new OS also enables the X terminals and Explora's to print from a network printer using NCDterm and NCD 3270 terminal emulators - previously they could only print from a locally-attached printer. Finally, the new version adds support for boot server flash cards, which enables an NCD Explora equipped with one to act as a boot server to other Explora's on a local network. NCDware 5.1 will ship any day now and runs on either a Unix or Windows NT server. It costs $300.
