NCAA "FINAL FOUR" FLOOR GROWN FROM MICHIGAN TREES
DAYTON, Ohio, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- When the University of Michigan Wolverines run down the court of the Minneapolis Metrodome in the NCAA Final Four playoffs Saturday, they will be pounding a hard maple floor made from Michigan trees grown by Mead Corporation.
The floor was made especially for the NCAA tournament and will only be used for the final three games.
Mead's Northern Hardwoods division based in South Range, Mich., processed trees grown on Mead lands in the Upper Peninsula into 17,000 board feet of green lumber for the Metrodome court's floor. This is the equivalent of 70 hard maple trees of average size. The lumber was then kiln dried, molded, sanded and assembled into large panels that will make up the court by another Michigan company, Horner Flooring. The finished floor measures 6,800 square feet, took two weeks to assemble and two weeks to finish.
Mead is the largest private landowner in the state of Michigan, with 699,000 acres. It's Northern Hardwoods unit processes more than 18 million board feet of lumber each year. More than three million board feet of lumber -- enough to make about 200 courts the size of the Metrodome's -- is sold to the U.S. and European flooring industries annually. Many National Basketball Association courts throughout the country have Mead lumber in their floors. Northern Hardwoods, also processes wood for bowling alleys, kitchen cabinets, furniture, home paneling, pianos, guitars and toys.
