Six widely-known public figures from the worlds of brewing, politics and sports will head the roster of speakers at this year's 53rd Annual Convention of the National Beer Wholesalers' Assn.

The convention, themed "The '90s: A Decade of Challenge," gets under way with a festive Welcome Reception on Sunday evening, September 30th. The following morning, Monday, October 1st, the opening general session will feature addresses by August Busch III, chairman, Anheuser-Busch, Inc., and political columnist/satirist Mark Shields.

During Tuesday, October 2nd's general session, speakers will include Leonard Goldstein, president, Miller Brewing Co.; former Pittsburgh Steeler football star Rocky Bleier; and former Senator Thomas Eagleton (D-MO).

The concluding event on the convention schedule will be an Awards Breakfast on Wednesday morning, October 3rd. It will feature an address by Fritz Maytag, president and master brewer, Anchor Brewing Co.

Besides the general sessions, a wide array of early morning and afternoon seminar sessions are also on the program. Among the topics to be covered will be "Alcohol vs. Illegal Drugs," "Planning for the Future," "Coping with the New Commercial Driver's License Regulations," "Retail Mega-Chains: Friend or Foe?," and "Improving Your Bottom Line Via Accurate Rating of Beer Wholesaler Performance."

The schedule of convention events has been tailored to allow plenty of time for wholesalers and their spouses to participate in a variety of optional tours of San Francisco and its surrounding sights. Destinations include the city's ethnic neighborhoods, the California wine country, Alcatrzaz Island, Muir Woods and Sausalito.
