NBWA condemns anti-alcohol cards

The National Beer Wholesalers Assn. has condemned an anti-alcohol education effort being conducted by the National Football League for being misleading and factually inaccurate.

The program, called "Think About It," consists of a series of cards addressing issues and problems facing today's youth. The cards are being circulated in the 1991 Pro Set Football card series. In a letter to NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, NBWA president Ron Sarasin called the program a "laudable effort," but took exception to two of the messages in the series.

The first is on a card featuring Dallas Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman, where Aikman is quoted as saying "The problem with drugs - and that includes everything from alcohol to cocaine to crack to LSD - is that they control you." A second card features Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason, who says "Booze is addictive."

"There are 80 million beer drinkers in this country, the vast majority of whom are responsible drinkers," Sarasin's letter said. "They are neither addicted to alcohol, nor are their lives controlled by it.

"Erroneous statements which lump legal beverage alcohol in with illegal drugs to make exaggerated claims," the letter continued, "are counterproductive to the goal of both the NFL and NBWA; to put the brakes on underage drinking. When you tell a youngster alcohol is addicting, then he sees is used responsibly in his own home, you lose credibility. Without credibility, the messages you are trying to convey on these cards become meaningless."

Sarasin closed his letter with a request that the commissioner "rethink the wording of the statements" and offered to work with the commissioner to "craft an effective message against underage drinking."
