NBS welcomes new members.

NEWCASTLE Building Society (NBS) has appointed Phil Moorhouse and John Morris as non-executive board directors.

Moorhouse is the former managing director of Darlington-based plc Northgate, one of the country's leading van rental firms. He left the stock market-listed company, which employs nearly 3,000 staff in England and Spain, last year.

The Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants also sits on the boards of Molins Plc, Renew (North East) Ltd and Cumbria NHS Partnership Trust.

Morris, from Wakefield, worked for several years as the head of finance for the Retail Division at HBOS plc, and prior to that he worked at Halifax and Leeds Permanent Building Society, as well as KPMG. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

David Holborn, NBS chairman, said: "These two board appointments are significant ones for our organisation.

Their extensive working knowledge of both the business and financial world bolsters the strength of our board even further. They have both excelled in their areas of expertise and we look forward to the support they will bring to the society's main board."

NBS also announces the retirement of Nigel Westwood as a non-executive member from its board at the end of this year. Westwood has been a member of the Newcastle's board since the merger with Universal in 2006.
