NBD JOINS MAGIC LINE TO FORM SUPERREGIONAL ATM NETWORK

DETROIT, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- NBD Bancorp (NYSE: NBD) and Magic Line, Inc. today announced a preliminary agreement to consolidate their automated teller machine (ATM) operations to form one of the largest electronic funds transfer (EFT) networks in the Midwest.
NBD's two proprietary regional networks, Network One in Michigan and MoneyMover in Indiana, will be combined with Magic Line, serving customers in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. The networks will continue to operate under their respective names. Ultimately, individual ATM and point-of-sale (POS) brand names will adopt the "Magic Line" name. The new network will initially have offices in Michigan and Indiana.
"Consolidating these three networks will allow us to offer customers throughout our market area more convenient ATM and debit point-of-sale services," said James L. Outland, president of Magic Line. At the same time, our selection of NBD as the processor for Magic Line transactions and our combined resources will facilitate research and development into new electronic products that our membership requires to deliver to its customer base."
Paul D. Visnaw, vice president of NBD, said, "This network consolidation will create a unified brand name for usage in our Midwest market area and will give our customers even greater utility and convenience."
NBD Bancorp would become an equity partner in Magic Line along with Citizens Bank, Comerica, First of America, First Federal of Michigan, Michigan Credit Union League and Michigan National Corporation.
The transaction is subject to execution of a definitive agreement and to regulatory approval.
The new combined network, with a card base of 7.4 million, will have more than 4,900 ATMs and 3,900 POS terminals connected through 667 member financial institutions. In 1992, more than 120 million transactions were made within the three networks collectively.
