NBC AND TIMES MIRROR CABLE ENTER INTO RETRANSMISSION CONSENT DEAL

NEW YORK, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- National Broadcasting Company, Inc. and Times Mirror Cable Television, Inc. announced an agreement that grants the cable systems owned by Times Mirror Cable the right to continue carrying the signals of television stations owned and operated by NBC. The agreement was reached pursuant to the "retransmission consent" provisions of the Cable Act of 1992.
As part of the multi-year agreement, Times Mirror Cable is renewing and extending carriage of CNBC, NBC's business and talk cable channel, which the company currently provides to almost 1 million of its subscribers nationally. Times Mirror Cable also agreed to a substantial launch of "America's Talking," a new cable programming service to be produced by NBC. "America's Talking" will feature talk and information programming about news events and other topical issues, and will include live and taped coverage to enhance the talk format. Through this agreement Times Mirror Cable also has distribution rights to "Canal de Noticias," NBC's 24-hour Spanish language news channel, once it is made available to the U.S. cable industry.
This agreement with Times Mirror Cable provides NBC's affiliated stations with the opportunity to negotiate agreements to provide local inserts into "America's Talking," creating a special basis on which they can reach their own retransmission consent agreements with Times Mirror Cable systems in their markets, if they have not already done so.
NBC Executive Vice President and General Counsel Richard Cotton said: "This agreement is another in the series that we are negotiating with the cable industry that benefit NBC, cable operators and consumers. It recognizes both the significant value of NBC's owned stations, and it provides significant value to Times Mirror Cable subscribers. NBC is also pleased that the agreement provides an opportunity for our affiliates to participate in our arrangement with Times Mirror Cable."
Said Thomas S. Rogers, NBC executive vice president and president of NBC Cable: "The agreement solidifies the position of CNBC in the cable marketplace and provides NBC with the opportunity to build a new cable programming asset for the future. Times Mirror Cable subscribers will now receive both the business and informational programming of CNBC and also have access to two new and exciting cable services -- `America's Talking' and 'Canal de Noticias.'"
Times Mirror Cable Senior Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Programming Christopher B. Forgy said: "This arrangement with NBC satisfies the `win-win' objective we established for retransmission consent negotiations with real benefit for NBC, Times Mirror Cable and our common viewers. We look forward to a newly strengthened relationship with NBC and the opportunity to provide `America's Talking' and `Canal de Noticias' to our customers."
Times Mirror Cable owns systems serving customers in the Los Angeles and New York metropolitan areas, where NBC owns television stations KNBC-TV, Los Angeles and WNBC, New York. Times Mirror Cable has over 1.2 million customers nationwide.
