NBA, NBC AND MILLER BREWING COMPANY ANNOUNCE MILLER RENEWAL THROUGH 1997-98 NBA SEASON

NEW YORK, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Miller Brewing Company and NBC have reached agreement on a new four-year advertising sponsorship of NBA broadcasts through the 1997-98 season, it was announced today by Miller, NBC and the NBA.
The new Miller agreement -- the first announcement of an advertiser renewal since the NBA announced a four-year extension of its current broadcast contract with NBC on April 28 -- comes with more than a full year left on the existing agreement.
In the new four-year deal, Miller retains its position as the largest advertiser on NBA telecasts on NBC, as well as its dominant position in the beer category. Miller also retains exclusivity for all on-air promotional features for the category.
An NBA sponsor for more than 12 years, Miller also will continue its sponsorship of many local NBA teams, as well as its NBA-themed national promotions, such as the current NBA Playoff handbook promotion, "Maximum Basketball."
David J. Stern, NBA commissioner, said, "We are thrilled to have Miller's active support for our games on NBC for the next four years. Miller has been a vital marketing partner of ours for more than a decade, helping us build the NBA to its current heights. Their early renewal signified confidence in our relationships with them and with NBC, and we welcome the opportunity to continue working together over the next five years."
"The NBA has emerged as perhaps the premier sport of the nineties, and NBC has taken television sponsorships to the next level," said Richard Strup, senior vice president of marketing for Miller. "The relationship between Miller, the NBA and NBC has evolved into a partnership where everyone benefits, especially the fans. We're extremely pleased to carry on our tradition for another four years."
Dick Ebersol, president of NBC Sports, said, "NBC Sports is very fortunate to have the best relationship in sports television with the NBA. But we would not be where we are today without the most generous and significant commitment by Miller Brewing. Miller's long-term, across-the-board support has been the fuel for the NBC Sports engine in a very competitive environment. We deeply appreciate our partnership with Miller and are happy they can share our excitement and success with the NBA."
Under the new NBA/NBC agreement, which begins with the 1994-95 NBA season, the league and the network will share equally in revenues that are achieved through advertising sales above a certain amount.
