NAVY, RAYTHEON CONDUCT SUCCESSFUL AEDIS-ER MISSILE TEST FLIGHT

LEXINGTON, Mass., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Navy and Raytheon Company, (NYSE:RTN) along with several contractors, conducted a successful intercept of a supersonic, high altitude target with an SM-2 Block IV missile launched from a MK 41 vertical launch system at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Raytheon's Missile Systems Division is the round design agent for the AEGIS-ER missile.
The test, conducted April 22, was the first guided flight of the SM-2 Block IV missile. The missile performed a long-range, high altitude intercept of an AQM-37 drone and successfully demonstrated the missile's guidance, fuzing, and warhead performance.
SM-2 Block IV, also known as AEGIS Extended Range (ER), is a surface-to-air missile that will complement the medium range SM-2 missile on AEGIS cruisers and destroyers equipped with the MK-41 vertical launch system. SM-2 Block IV's advanced technologies provide a significant performance improvement over previous versions of the Standard Missile. In addition, SM-2 Block IV will be modified to provide the fleet with an area defense capability against tactical ballistic missiles, and a Block IV variant is a candidate for a sea-based theater missile defense interceptor.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a $9 billion, technology-based, diversified international company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental, and Major Appliances.
