NAVSTAR GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM SATELLITE LAUNCHED
 HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Today's U.S. Air

Force launch of a NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite from Cape Canaveral AFS, Fla., marks the 29th consecutive successful launch of a McDonnell Douglas-built Delta expendable launch vehicle.
"We're out in front with our reliability record and we're proud of it," said Larry Gale, McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Company U.S. Air Force program manager. "This launch of Delta 207, the 12th carrying a GPS satellite for the Air Force, underscores the focus on quality ingrained in our government and industry team."
A 7925 configuration of the Delta II boosted the U.S. Air Force GPS spacecraft into its transfer orbit. The GPS is a space-based radio navigation system which provides U.S. and allied land, sea and air forces with worldwide, three-dimensional position and velocity information. NAVSTAR GPS satellites were used extensively during the Persian Gulf War by both U.S. and allied forces.
In 1987 the U.S. Air Force awarded MDSSC a contract to build and launch seven Delta II rockets. The following year the Air Force picked up the options on 13 more. Last summer the U.S. Air Force let another contract for five Delta II launch vehicles.
