NAVAL SURFACE WARFARE CENTER INSTALLS FIRST CRAY RESEARCH SUPERCOMPUTERS
EAGAN, Minn., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), the primary laboratory of the U.S. Navy for surface ship warfare research and development, has installed and accepted two CRAY Y- MP 2E systems at its Dahlgren, Va., Division. These systems, installed in the first half of this year, are the first Cray Research (NYSE: CYR) supercomputers acquired by the Dahlgren Division.
Cray Research is providing the CRAY Y-MP 2E systems to NSWC as a subcontractor to Federal Computer Corporation. The new systems will be integrated into a high-performance scientific and engineering computing environment, which also includes a high-speed network, an archival system, a tape system, and high-speed printers. The CRAY Y-MP 2E systems, which replace a Control Data Corporation CYBER system, will provide greater processing capacity for solving large scientific and engineering problems associated with research and development of warfare and weapons systems. The supercomputers will be used for high-speed file serving applications as well.
Cray Research has 307 systems installed worldwide. The company provides the most powerful and highest quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
Pricing for the CRAY Y-MP 2E system begins at $2 million in the United States.
