NAVAIR LINKS 10,000 MACS ON TWO COASTS

RESTON, Va., March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- This afternoon, the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) activated one of the largest Appletalk networks in the world. More than 10,000 Macintosh computers reside on the wide area network, which encompasses China Lake and Point Mugu in California, the Naval Air Warfare Center-Aircraft Division at Patuxent River in Southern Maryland; and NAVAIR headquarters in Arlington, Va.
"Appletalk already served 85 to 90 percent of the senior management within NAVAIR," explained CDR Craig Luigart, chief information officer at NAVAIR headquarters. "We saw the power of peer-to-peer computing and the ease of using Macintosh computers, so we set out to develop a team-wide wide area network."
"NAVAIR has very complex networking needs, and we are very proud that Macintosh technology provides the ideal solution," stated Peter S. Hirshberg, director, large business and government marketing. "This success is a reflection of Apple's commitment to our federal customers. Macintosh technology is a full player in implementing the government's vision of standards-compliant offices."
NAVAIR is a multi-billion dollar operation with 45,000 employees in more than 20 facilities worldwide. Plans include expansion of the Appletalk network to link major installations in Philadelphia, Norfolk, Va., North Island, Calif., and the Pentagon.
"Senior management has an increased desire to attack problems on a team basis," Luigart noted. "The Appletalk network helps us build the synergism we recognize is vital to our current and future operations. Very simply, this network is central to our efforts to technically refresh the command and build a seamless communications system."
Headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) is a leading manufacturer of advanced personal computer systems, system software and peripherals for education, business, government and the home.
