NATURAL RESOURCES BOOK REVIEW.

The Frozen Coast

By Graham Charles, Mark Jones, Marcus Waters, with Sarah Moodie (Lyons Press), $29.95

Since the days of Homer, tales of adventure and exploration have resonated with the basic human desire to see what's over the next hill, or at least hear about it from those brave enough to go there.

This sparkling account by three New Zealanders tells of their 528-mile exploration of the Antarctic Peninsula in sea kayaks. Fighting icebergs, near-frozen water, penguin poop, freezing temperatures, exhaustion and the aftereffects of homemade Ukrainian vodka, they managed to paddle to the Antarctic Circle.

Illustrated with splendid images that capture the harsh grace of an alien landscape, armchair explorers will enjoy this book full of self- deprecating wit and charm.

ON THE INTERNET

Field and Stream magazine has a reputation for being the front-runner in outdoor sports - and its Web site isn't bad, either.

Fieldandstream.com is more in-depth, for obvious sponsorship reasons, than your average private Web site. This site is loaded with interesting and current articles on fishing, hunting and shooting with viewing options for previous pieces. Best of all, fieldandstream.com is free with no pressure for membership (although you can order from the site).

Viewers also will find many interesting links to individual articles. For instance, one column about an outdoor chef has links to previous articles and recipes with an ``additional info'' cap.

The ``Where To Go'' section also is a treat for anglers and hunters with its random locations throughout the United States and Canada. Brief descriptions are included with additional information on guides and outfitters.

Although viewers might find the Web site to be not as personal as most, it is definitely worthwhile in professionalism and detail to information.
