NATURAL HISTORY ADVENTURES OFFERED IN MOST REMOTE, PRISTINE AREAS OF BELIZE IN CENTRAL AMERICA IN '94

RIVERSIDE, Conn., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Short adventure tours next year will explore the natural history of some of the most remote and pristine areas of Belize in Central America.
With Belize easily reached by plane and in the forefront of environmental tourism, Get Lost! Adventures has scheduled a series of programs ranging from two to five days. They include an easy general history trip combining walking, optional rafting and birding; float trips through pristine wilderness allowing for viewing of rare and endangered species; more difficult rainforest trekking for hard adventure enthusiasts; a jungle survival training course; and a trek into deepest Belize untouched since Mayan times.
Ralph Salomon, director of Get Lost! Adventures, said anyone with a genuine interest in rainforest exploration and conservation, who doesn't mind getting off the beaten path in order to see the best natural history Belize has to offer, will be right for these programs.
"We limit the groups usually to a maximum of eight people. This ensures low impact exploration of the rich and diverse interior of Belize," Salomon said. "We have programs to suit everyone. All that is needed is an appreciation of outdoor living and a spirit of adventure."
"The five new programs are designed to educate, but are also great fun," he said. "If you're horrified by sliding down a slippery slope, or getting wet rafting, then these are not for you. The trips are graded for difficulty, Class I to III, so anyone can tell at a glance whether they are up to a particular adventure."
Salomon said these new programs offer an alternative to the more standardized itineraries hitherto available. "People will be able to really learn what it's like to live in the rainforest, learn to appreciate the ecosystem and have fun doing it!"
 The programs are:
Ceiba Camp -- Three days in a "safari-style" camp with tents, showers, toilets and a covered cooking/dining area. A combination of hiking, rafting and birding is offered. Wednesday departures January- August; $495 per person; Class I-II.
Rafting Expeditions -- A three-day float trip to witness many of Belize's rare and endangered species. Monthly departures January- August, except May; $510 per person; Class II.
Rainforest Trekking -- Five days for hard adventurers, exploring remote and pristine regions. This is a self-contained trip where participants are expected to carry their own gear. Monthly departures January-August; $885 per person; Class III.
The Ultimate Explorer -- Four days of rafting, trekking and caving in the Maya Mountain Divide; an area barely explored since classic Mayan times. Departures are on a request basis with the price dependent on the number of participants; Class III.
Jungle Survival Training -- Four days in which participants will learn how to use the natural elements of the rainforest in order to sustain life in emergency situations. Basic bush survival skills, map reading and study of traditional uses of the rainforest practiced in Belize since classic Mayan times are included in the curriculum. $625 per person; Class III.
