NATURAL GAS BEGINS TO FLOW ON EMPIRE STATE PIPELINE

HOUSTON, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Natural gas has begun flowing through the western segment of the newly constructed Empire State Pipeline from the United States-Canada border near Niagara Falls to Rochester, N.Y.
Sponsors said the western segment went into operation Nov. 1, and the rest of the Empire State Pipeline, from Rochester to Syracuse, N.Y., will begin deliveries by mid-November.
Empire is initially contracted to transport approximately 200 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of natural gas to local utilities and electric power producers located in western and central New York. By 1995, those volumes are expected to climb to over 400 MMcf/d.
Construction of the 24-inch pipeline began on June 11, 1993, following five years of planning and regulatory reviews by numerous agencies.
Empire is currently accepting requests for firm and interruptible transportation. For further information, interested parties should call 716-436-1120.
Empire has opened a field office in the Rochester area with Michael M. Hasty as superintendent of operations.
Empire State Pipeline is sponsored by subsidiaries of The Coastal Corporation, Westcoast Energy Inc. and Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation. ANR Pipeline Company, a subsidiary of Coastal, was in charge of building the pipeline and is its operator.
Rochester Gas and Electric (NYSE: RGS) supplies electric and natural gas service wholly within the state of New York and is engaged in the production, transmission, distribution and sale of these services in a nine-county area centering around the city of Rochester.
Westcoast Energy Inc. (NYSE: WE), parent of Union Energy Inc., is a diversified Canadian energy company with headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia. Its principal interests are in natural gas pipelines, gas processing, gas marketing, cogeneration and other related operations.
The Coastal Corporation (NYSE: CGP) is a Houston-based energy holding company.
