NATIONWIDE ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE SEEKS STUDENT ENVIRONMENTALISTS
ADA, Mich., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Through a unique partnership between Amway Corp. and Newsweek magazine, young environmentalists nationwide with the best ideas for protecting the planet stand to win a total of $60,000 in cash prizes for their schools.
Sponsored by Amway in cooperation with Newsweek, the second Amway "Class Act" Environmental Challenge competition for students in grades four through eight will award $7,500 cash prizes to each of eight schools nationwide. The awards will be presented in the name of the winning classes demonstrating outstanding environmental stewardship through original projects, campaigns, or fund-raisers. The contest was announced in a four-page pullout advertisement in the Sept. 7 issue of Newsweek.
In addition to the cash prizes, Amway will present each winning school with a commemorative plaque and individual certificates of merit for each student participating in the project. Each winning school also will be featured in a special advertisement in Newsweek.
Teachers from each of the eight winning classes will receive a $500 gift award. Only one class per school will be eligible for the contest. The participating school will be responsible for selecting one entrant in situations where multiple classes from the same school wish to submit entries. Entry deadline is Dec. 18, 1992. Winners will be announced in January of 1993.
Winners will be determined by a panel of judges including environmental educators and representatives from Newsweek and Amway Corp. Entries are judged on positive environmental impact, creativity, originality, and execution.
Last year's competition awarded over $50,000 in prizes to schools in New York, Michigan, South Carolina, Colorado, and Arkansas selected from over 400 entries.
"By encouraging and showcasing the environmental projects of students and their schools, Amway hopes to raise awareness among the youth who are future stewards of our environment," said Nan Van Andel, Amway vice president of Catalog and Communications.
Amway is the 1989 recipient of the United Nations Environment Programme Achievement Award.
The Amway "Class Act" Environmental Challenge reflects the corporation's continuing efforts to promote environmental education and awareness through a variety of projects.
