NATIONSBANK TO HOST SERIES OF PUBLIC HEARINGS TO SEEK PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITS COMMUNITY INVESTMENT EFFORTS

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank (NYSE: NB) today announced it is hosting a series of public hearings in eight geographically dispersed cities to seek public comment on the bank's community investment efforts.
Statewide hearings are scheduled for the following cities: Atlanta, Ga., May 1; Richmond, Va., May 3; Columbia, S.C.., May 11; Baltimore, Md., May 19; Houston, Texas, and Tampa, Fla., May 22; Raleigh, N.C., May 24; and Nashville, Tenn., May 26. (See Editor's Note)
"A large measure of the progress we've made in the community investment arena can be traced directly to ideas received from the people this program serves," said Catherine P. Bessant, principal Community Investment executive for NationsBank. "We're hopeful these hearings will be another successful tool for assessing the needs of our communities."
NationsBank is the first major bank to sponsor self-initiated public hearings. While the hearings invite public comment on the bank's Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) performance, they are not mandated or sponsored by federal banking regulators.
The public is being invited to participate in the forums through notifications to community-based organizations and advertisements placed in major daily newspapers and publications that reach low- to moderate- income neighborhoods. Participants will address a panel of senior bank officers and community leaders, or they may submit written testimony.
Individuals interested in testifying at the hearings or observing the proceedings should contact the NationsBank Community Investment coordinator in the respective host cities.
The NationsBank Community Investment Program seeks to provide credit and financial services to meet the needs of low- to moderate-income individuals and small businesses, as well as to promote community economic development. Its goal is to ensure that NationsBank is the premier community lending institution in all of its markets.
During 1992, NationsBank lenders extended more than $2.2 billion in community investment loans. These results mark substantial first-year progress toward the bank's goal of making $10 billion in such loans within 10 years.
NationsBank is the fifth-largest U.S. banking company with $121 billion in assets and full-service offices in nine states and the District of Columbia.
