NATIONSBANK TO CONSOLIDATE SOUTH CAROLINA OPERATIONS
INTO CURRENT C&S SOUTH CAROLINA OPERATIONS CENTER
COLUMBIA, S.C., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank (NYSE: NB) will consolidate its primary South Carolina operations activities here into the current C&S South Carolina operations center on Greystone Boulevard when the NCNB and C&S banks in South Carolina merge later this year.
"This move is part of our plan to make NationsBank the best bank in South Carolina," said James R. Lientz, president of C&S South Carolina and designated president of NationsBank of South Carolina. "Functioning with one statewide operational system will allow us to offer a wider range of products and services, provide an even higher level of customer service and reduce costs.
"As we indicated at the time the merger was announced, combining two large organizations that are so similar in purpose and structure leads to staff duplication," Lientz said. "Operational and related staff support consolidations are expected to eliminate approximately 200-250 jobs over the next six to nine months."
Lientz said the following factors will reduce the number of employees actually displaced in South Carolina:
Employees whose jobs are eliminated will be eligible
for the company's internal placement program, which
matches available candidates with open positions
 throughout the company.
Outside hiring has been frozen in positions for
which displaced employees likely would be qualified.
Displaced employees will receive first priority in
 consideration for these open positions.
In the event that jobs are transferred to another
city, some employees will be given the opportunity
 to move with their jobs.
Outplacement assistance and severance pay will be available for employees who cannot find another position with the bank.
The operations consolidation will be completed by the third quarter of 1992. At that time, the NCNB and C&S banks in South Carolina will become NationsBank of South Carolina.
Joel A. Smith, president of NCNB Carolinas and who will serve in a similar role for NationsBank, said NationsBank's customers will be able to bank at more than 180 locations, the largest branch network in South Carolina.
Smith confirmed earlier estimates that NationsBank will close approximately 40 branch offices in South Carolina as part of the consolidation. He said that branch consolidations will take place during the second and third quarters of 1992.
"The branches to be consolidated will be within approximately one mile of another branch. The branches that remain will be those that are the most convenient for our customers," he said. "As a result of the merger, NationsBank customers in virtually every city will have more banking location choices than they had with NCNB or C&S."
