NATIONSBANK SPONSORS JOURNEY OF HOPE BICYCLING TOUR TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED'S OBSTACLES

CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank today invited corporate citizens across America to join the bank in its commitment to physically challenged individuals and to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
As the presenting sponsor of the Journey of Hope bicycling tour organized by PUSH America -- which launches its cross-country trip today in San Francisco -- NationsBank is seeking to expand the tour's mission to raise awareness of the obstacles that people with disabilities encounter.
"We are committed to providing people with disabilities access to NationsBank facilities, services and employment opportunities," said Steve Schutze, director of Corporate Resources for the Disabled. "We chose the PUSH America sponsorship to encourage all businesses and citizens to make the most of their responsibilities in this area -- and to help demonstrate the possibilities when they do."
In January 1992, NationsBank began an aggressive program of facility access improvements far surpassing ADA requirements:
--Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf (TDD) have been installed in all the bank's customer service centers.
--A three-year plan to meet height accommodations for wheelchair accessibility to over 1,100 automatic teller machines (ATMs) nationwide is on track to be completed six months early.
--Braille-marked buttons and panels are being added on more than 1,600 ATMs nationwide. This 18-month project is being completed on schedule.
--The two-year program to complete "readily achievable" facility access improvements also is on schedule. These include structural changes such as exterior door widenings, curb cuts, new wheelchair ramps and accessible parking spaces.
In addition to facilities work, Schutze noted other efforts undertaken by the company, including training for more than 22,000 customer contact associates to help them better serve customers with disabilities. The bank's television commercials have been close- captioned for the hearing impaired.
Schutze also highlighted how accommodations for the disabled strengthen the company's employment potential. "By committing to accommodate special needs when hiring or promoting, we ensure that NationsBank has the opportunity to have the best qualified person for each job," he said. An active training program for managers and co- workers augments these efforts.
PUSH America, the national outreach program of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, serves physically challenged Americans through donations of adaptive equipment, educational programs and by promoting volunteerism on college campuses.
NationsBank Corporation (NYSE: NB) is the fifth-largest banking company in the United States with $121 billion in assets and full- service banking centers in nine states and the District of Columbia.
