NATIONSBANK PLANS TWO NEW BRANCHES IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank (NYSE: NB) announced

today it is investing approximately $1.5 million to build two new bank branches on the city's Southside and is selling two other bank buildings to a group of minority businessmen.
NationsBank will spend $1 million to build a new, full-service bank office at Cascade Road and I-285. The office will have drive-through lanes and an Automated Teller Machine (ATM). Customers served by the current Cascade Road and Campbellton Road offices will be served by the new Cascade Road branch.
NationsBank also has decided to locate a new bank branch in the West End area targeting the Atlanta University Center and commercial businesses in that part of the city. The bank is searching for a location for that office.
NationsBank has reached an agreement to sell its current West End and Cascade Road bank buildings to Capitol City Bank, headed by George Andrews, who is forming a new bank. Andrews is now seeking capital from investors and approval from the state. NationsBank will continue to serve customers of the West End and Cascade offices with its new facilities.
NationsBank has already disclosed that it plans to convert its Stewart-Lakewood bank branch into a Community Resource Development Center. The new center, to be operated by the NAACP in a new joint program with NationsBank, will provide credit counseling services to consumers and assist minorities seeking to open new businesses throughout metro Atlanta. The office is one of six offices in the Southeast and Texas that NationsBank and the NAACP will operate to make more credit available to low- and moderate-income customers.
"With our new NationsBank offices, we will have our resources closer to the emerging residential and commercial activities in these neighborhoods," said Dave Bair, a NationsBank executive vice president responsible for consumer banking in Atlanta. "We are reconfiguring our branch system to better meet the needs of our customers."
As an example, NationsBank cannot expand at its current Cascade Road site because there is no additional land available. This site has only one drive-through teller and no ATM. The proposed new bank office will be larger and will be close to the proposed new shopping center near Cascade Road and I-285 that will include a new Bruno's supermarket. "We will help lead the way in the development of the Cascade Road/I-285 region with our investment there," said Bair.
Each of the bank offices that will be sold or consolidated into the new facilities was built before 1971. The new offices reposition NationsBank to keep its competitive edge in the community by improving customer service and having state-of-the-art facilities.
"We are constantly looking for ways to increase our customer service and delivery based on changes taking place in our markets and our industry," said Bair. "This investment reaffirms the desire by NationsBank to continue to be the leading provider of financial services in the south Atlanta and Southside markets."
NationsBank is the fourth largest banking company in the United States with $113 billion in assets and more than 1,800 offices in nine states and the District of Columbia.
