NATIONSBANK NAMES FORMER PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE MIKE SIANI TO HEAD NEW PROFESSIONAL SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT GROUP

CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank Corporation (NYSE: NB) said today it has named former professional athlete Mike Siani to head its new Professional Sports and Entertainment Group. The Group, a division of NationsBank Trust, has been formed to meet the unique financial management needs of professional athletes and entertainers.
With the backing of one of the nation's largest banking companies and trust banks, the Sports and Entertainment Group is uniquely positioned to serve professional athletes, NationsBank Chairman Hugh McColl said today at a press conference.
NationsBank has existing relationships with more than 250 professional athletes and is among the country's top lenders to pro sports franchises. The creation of the Professional Sports and Entertainment Group brings a new degree of specialization to this market.
McColl and Siani introduced the group at a reception for NFL rookies Wayne Simmons and James Trapp, two of the newest athletes to become customers of NationsBank Professional Sports and Entertainment Group. Simmons is the number-one draft pick of the Green Bay Packers and Trapp is the third-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Raiders. Both are 1993 graduates of Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.
"Our nine-state franchise is home to 20 professional sports teams and hundreds of individual pro athletes," said McColl. "Our resources enable us to serve a wide variety of teams and players. Now, NationsBank Trust is implementing a highly tailored strategy to meet the demands of this market -- both regionally and nationally."
In addition to the NFL, the Group is focusing on players in the NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball, as well as professional golfers, tennis players, boxers and NASCAR drivers. It also serves professional entertainers, agents, attorneys and other management groups specifically organized to market the talents of athletes and entertainers.
The Group offers a broad array of personalized services, including asset management, advisory and custody services, estate planning, real estate management and tax preparation and consulting. Associates are well suited to meet the needs of professional athletes because they are former athletes themselves.
"We really do know what services the athletes are looking for because we were once in similar positions," said Siani. "As athletes ourselves, we have the insight to help these players identify their financial goals and then meet them."
Siani, a 1972 graduate of Villanova University in Villanova, Pa., played for the Oakland Raiders from 1972-78. He was the Raiders' first draft pick of 1972 and a member of their 1977 Superbowl team. In 1979, he joined the Baltimore Colts and played with them until his retirement from professional football in 1981.
Working with Siani are business development officers Earl Layne and Danielle Lares. Layne, who is based in Charlotte, was an All-American football scholar in 1987 and 1988 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. In 1989, he was recognized as the school's Outstanding Black Student Athlete. Lares is based in Tampa, Fla. She graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where she was a member of the women's tennis team.
Other new customers of the Professional Sports and Entertainment Group include Tom Carter from Notre Dame, the first pick of the Washington Redskins, and Ben Coleman, who attended Wake Forest and is the second round draft choice of the Phoenix Cardinals.
