NATIONSBANK COMMITS $50,000 FOR TORNADO RELIEF

PETERSBURG, Va., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank (NYSE: NB) announced today that it is committing $50,000 as the "NationsBank Challenge" to offer relief and help rebuild those areas in Tri-Cities that were damaged by tornadoes last Friday.
The NationsBank Challenge will match donations made to two local relief efforts.
In the first effort, NationsBank is joining forces with "Operation Relief: Together for the Tri-Cities," a telethon scheduled for Friday evening to assist individuals and families affected by storms in the area. Up to $25,000 of the bank's commitment will be issued as a challenge to match pledges called in to the telethon.
Donations to the telethon are tax-deductible, will be given to United Way and administered by a local committee of representatives from the Tri-Cities area.
"During this time of critical need, we need to come together with our friends and competitors, as many local television and radio stations have done, to help those whose homes were destroyed by the storms," said Randolph McElroy, president of NationsBank of Virginia.
"Our challenge is to all citizens of Virginia to reach out and help their neighbors. We invite everyone to participate with us by calling in a pledge and requesting that it be matched by NationsBank," said McElroy. The bank will match pledges up to a total of $25,000. The telethon will be simulcast Friday evening from 8-9 p.m. on channels 6, 8 and 35.
The remaining $25,000 of the NationsBank Challenge will match contributions to the Historic Petersburg Foundation to restore historic buildings that were damaged or destroyed by the tornadoes.
"The rich heritage of the Tri-Cities area draws a large number of tourists annually, and it is vital to the local economy that we re- establish the areas of historic significance," said McElroy. "The sooner we can rebuild and revitalize the area, the sooner we can begin to recover from this disaster."
In order for NationsBank to match Historic Foundation gifts, checks should be sent to the Historic Petersburg Foundation, P.O. Box 691, Petersburg, VA 23804. Please indicate NationsBank Challenge on the check.
