NATIONSBANK AND THE SOUTHERN REGIONAL EDUCATION BOARD TO HONOR COLUMBIA COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM AND SUPERINTENDENT DIANNE LANE

LAKE CITY, Fla., Feb. /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank and the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) will honor Superintendent Dianne Lane and the Columbia County School System for excellence in education today at a press conference and luncheon.
NationsBank Vice President Byron Cawthon will join NationsBank Florida President Gene Taylor, who will present the $75,000 check to Lane as part of the NationsBank A+ Award for Excellence in Education program in conjunction with the SREB.
The presentation will take place at Lake City Middle School at 10:30 a.m. The luncheon, sponsored by NationsBank at the Holiday Inn, follows the presentation.
This year's award, presented to only four school districts in 15 states, entitles each winner to a $75,000 grant and participation in The SREB Leadership Academy. The Academy is an educational leadership development program which provides intensive leadership training for school management teams.
"Helping to improve education is a top priority at NationsBank," said Cawthon, senior banking executive for NationsBank in Lake City. "Through our partnership with the SREB and the resources of the fourth- largest bank in the country, NationsBank has indeed been able to make a difference in the lives of the people of Lake City."
"It's refreshing that a corporation such as NationsBank is willing to put its money where its mouth is," said Lane. "They're taking the current focus on a demand for improved education beyond verbalization and putting their resources -- fiscal, human and corporate -- behind their belief in the American education system and its importance to the future of our country.
"The opportunity for people from a small community like Columbia County to participate in the SREB's leadership program -- and be essentially on the cutting edge -- is an opportunity of a lifetime for those individuals involved as well as the school system," Lane added.
"I truly believe that this partnership with our school system, NationsBank and SREB is going to move our school system forward more quickly than anything else we could have done."
The $2-million program, which began in 1990 and runs through the end of the decade, is limited to 12 school systems. More than 200 school districts have applied for the program since 1990; the last four will be chosen in 1994.
"The winners use the grant to help reach the educational goals they've set," Cawthon said.
A five-member team from each district also attends SREB leadership seminars annually for four years. The seminars focus on cutting-edge education practices and political and social issues. They often are presented by nationally known experts, including former President Jimmy Carter, who recently discussed world politics at an Academy seminar.
Also attending the festivities will be Dr. Alton Crews, director of SREB; Jerry Bradley, NationsBank regional executive; Lake City Mayor Gerald Witt; City Manager Charles Howell, and Judge Julian Collins.
NationsBank Corporation is the fourth-largest bank holding company in the United States with $118 billion in assets and full-service banking centers in nine states and the District of Columbia.
