NATIONSBANK AND THE SOUTHERN REGIONAL EDUCATION BOARD AWARD FOUR NATIONSBANK A+ AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

ATLANTA, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank (NYSE: NB) and the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) today announced they have awarded four NationsBank A+ Awards for Excellence in Education grants to school districts in Virginia, South Carolina, Florida and Texas.
The award entitles each district to a $75,000 grant and participation in The SREB Leadership Academy, an innovative school leadership development program.
The winning school districts are Newport News Public Schools in Newport News, Va.; Spartanburg County School District Three in Glendale, S.C.; Columbia County School System in Lake City, Fla.; and Temple Independent School District in Temple, Texas.
School districts which take part in the program, established in 1990, receive a grant from NationsBank and participate in a five-year educational leadership development activity that provides intensive leadership training for school management teams.
"Helping to improve education is a top priority at NationsBank," said NationsBank Chairman Hugh McColl. "Through our partnership with SREB, these representatives have the opportunity to develop their leadership potential and create model programs to improve education on the local level.
"We can demand better schools. And we can support them with our personal and corporate time and resources," McColl added.
"We sincerely believe that this partnership with NationsBank will not only benefit the school systems receiving the grants, but also will assist us in developing a model for leadership skill training that can be replicated in each of the 15 states in SREB's service region," said Dr. Alton Crews, director of The SREB Leadership Academy.
The highly competitive program is limited to 12 school systems, selected over a four-year period. The first four districts were chosen in 1990; the last four will be selected in 1994. More than 200 districts have applied for entry since the program began. Each district must submit two or three significant goals to be achieved over the next five years. Selected districts use the $75,000 grant to help their schools reach the goals they've chosen.
A five-member team from each district also attends three SREB leadership seminars annually for four years. The sessions focus on cutting-edge education, political and social issues and are often presented by nationally known experts, including former President Jimmy Carter, who recently discussed world politics at an Academy seminar.
The NationsBank A+ Awards are part of a $2 million commitment to The SREB Leadership Academy in support of the board's initiatives to improve public schools throughout the South.
NationsBank is the fourth-largest bank holding company in the United States with $118 billion in assets and full-service banking centers in nine states and the District of Columbia.
