NATIONSBANK, NCNB, C&S ESTABLISH FLORIDA RECOVERY/ASSISTANCE CENTER
MIAMI, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank (NYSE: NB), NCNB and C&S announced the establishment of The NationsBank Recovery and Assistance Center in West Perrine, a south Florida neighborhood devastated by Hurricane Andrew.
NationsBank has formed a partnership with the West Perrine Community Development Corporation to provide shelter, financial and personal counseling and long-term assistance.
"We have 10 mobile homes set up on land on Indigo Road in the West Perrine neighborhood," said Adolfo Henriques, NationsBank senior executive in Dade County.
Henriques was joined by NationsBank Chief Executive Officer Hugh McColl and NationsBank Florida president Gene Taylor.
"The mobile homes will provide temporary shelter for at least 10 needy families during the relief and recovery process," Henriques added. "Once we have the families secure in their temporary homes, we will work in conjunction with Ed Hanna and the West Perrine Community Development Corporation to provide necessary medical, financial and other needs."
Hanna and the West Perrine CDC have on site a medical clinic and food distribution center as well as federal, state and county assistance within a two-block area of the site.
The West Perrine Community Development Corporation was established in 1985 to improve economic conditions in West Perrine in the form of housing developments, capital improvements and commercial revitalization.
"Every family has a right to have a quality home. And NationsBank is the first bank to take a real interest in the poverty pocket here in West Perrine," said Hanna, president of the West Perrine CDC. "We welcome the marriage between NationsBank and the community of West Perrine."
"NationsBank associates will join West Perrine CDC to assist in the long-term relief needed in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew," Henriques said. "We will provide the shelter, counseling and job training necessary to help these people get back on their feet.
"We want to be able to give some hope back to the community of West Perrine," Henriques said. "NationsBank is meeting the immediate needs of thousands of victims of Hurricane Andrew through its relief efforts in South Florida. The West Perrine partnership is a tremendous opportunity for us to provide the long-term assistance in addition to short-term aid."
McColl praised the contributions of the NationsBank, NCNB and C&S teammates in Florida.
"Our associates here have provided relief to Hurricane Andrew victims throughout South Florida," McColl said.
"Out of the Disaster Relief Center, our people have made hundreds of deliveries of food, supplies and water into the hard-hit areas of South Florida.
"We have delivered over 150 tons of ice, 100 tons of water and more than 100 tons of food not only for our associates but other organizations and communities as well.
"The West Perrine partnership is an excellent example of our long- term commitment to helping rebuild South Florida -- and of the NationsBank Power to Make a Difference."
NationsBank, the fourth-largest bank in the United States, is the company formed by the merger of NCNB and C&S. The Florida merger will be complete October 8.
