NATIONSBANK, NAACP TO OPEN SIXTH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT RESOURCE CENTER IN FT. LAUDERDALE

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank (NYSE: NB) and the NAACP will open their sixth Community Development Resource Center to promote community development lending early next month.
The center, which will be located on West Broward Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale, will serve all of Florida. Grand opening festivities are set for Tuesday, August 3.
"We want to make capital available to the small business person," said Gene Taylor, president of NationsBank Florida. "We want families to be able to buy their own homes. We want to educate individuals, early-on, in the basics of financial responsibility and sound planning.
"The center will help us identify those who historically have been underserved or left on the sidelines of economic progress," Taylor added. "While NationsBank is committed to serving all of its communities, we cannot accomplish our goals without a tremendous amount of support.
"The NAACP, which will staff our Florida center, will bring experience, support and community outreach. We could not ask for better teammates."
Earl Shinhoster, regional director of the NAACP said: "NationsBank is providing leadership and a model for getting the job done.
"The NAACP Community Development Resource Center presents a challenge to other banks and financial institutions across the nation. This is significant as our partnership with NationsBank is significant," Shinhoster added, "because no one financial institution can be expected to fulfill all the credit needs of this state, region or nation."
NationsBank has committed to fund the Resource Centers for three years. The bank announced its original commitment of five key cities in December 1991.
The five NationsBank cities are Austin, Tex.; Atlanta, Ga.; Charlotte, N.C.; Columbia, S.C., and Richmond, Va.
"We have assembled a staff of professionals that is committed to helping to place more low-to-moderate income individuals and minorities on that level playing field," said project manager Ardell Walcott.
Tijuanna Jenkins-Woods is the center's education and counseling director, and Elijah Wooten is business development director. They will work with NationsBank representatives to provide economic development, business development outreach, public/private partnerships, affordable housing and consumer lending.
The following also will be emphasized: Consumer and business education and counseling, and technical assistance in the areas of needs assessment, product development, marketing, lending practices, strategic planning and product and service delivery.
"These representatives are poised to have an impact in Florida," Taylor said. "The announcement of our partnership with the NAACP in Florida reflects a strong tie between our organizations and presents us with a unique opportunity to implement our program."
The NationsBank-NAACP Community Development Resource Center is at 3800 West Broward Blvd. and is open from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The phone number is (305) 583-6586.
NationsBank is the fourth largest bank in Florida with more than $23 billion in assets and more than 360 banking centers statewide. It is the fifth-largest U.S. bank with more than $121 billion in assets.
