 NATIONSBANK, NAACP OPEN SOUTH CAROLINA
 COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT RESOURCE CENTER
COLUMBIA, S.C., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- NationsBank Corporation (NYSE: NB) and the NAACP today opened their South Carolina Community Development Resource Center designed to increase community development lending throughout the Palmetto State.
"As the South's leading financial institution, we have a fundamental responsibility to fuel capital into all the communities we serve," said Jim Lientz, president of NationsBank in South Carolina. "But we cannot accomplish that goal without a tremendous amount of support from organizations like the NAACP, which has a strong track record of experience, support and reaching out to their communities. We truly could not ask for better teammates."
"By making capital available to small business owners, by helping families buy their own homes and by educating young people early in the basics of financial responsibility and sound planning, we can turn dreams into realities and make all our communities more vibrant places in which to live and do business."
Dr. William F. Gibson, chairman of the board of the NAACP, said, "The NAACP extends its hand and experience to NationsBank in our mutual objectives of better serving all the people in our communities. This partnership should be viewed as a vital link between the NAACP's vast community network and the NationsBank commitment to community development."
NationsBank has committed $1.1 million to fund the Resource Centers for three years. The other centers will be in Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte and Richmond. All will be open by the end of September.
"NationsBank has proven itself a leader in the challenging arena of community reinvestment," Gibson said. "The NAACP is pleased to be a major partner with NationsBank, as together we seek to make a difference in the lives of people."
The centers are designed to pursue continued economic development, business development outreach, public/private partnerships, affordable housing and consumer lending in the states they serve. Consumer and business education and counseling, economic development advocacy and technical assistance in the areas of needs assessment, product development, marketing, lending practices, strategic planning and product and service delivery also will be emphasized.
Milton Small will serve as education and counseling director of the South Carolina Center, while L.R. Byrd will serve as business development director.
"This staff is poised to have an impact on South Carolina," Lientz said. "They are one of the keys to us making a difference in our state's communities. We're excited about this partnership, and with our teammates at the NAACP, we will do what it takes to make this effort a success."
The NAACP Community Development Resource Center is at 4100 N. Main St. Its phone number is (803) 754-5581, and its office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
NationsBank Corp. is the country's fourth largest bank holding company, with $113 billion in assets and more than 1,800 offices in nine states and the District of Columbia.
