NATIONALE-NEDERLANDEN CEASES DIRECT NON-LIFE INSURANCE ACTIVITIES IN UNITED KINGDOM

 NATIONALE-NEDERLANDEN CEASES DIRECT NON-LIFE INSURANCE
 ACTIVITIES IN UNITED KINGDOM
THE HAGUE, The Netherlands, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Nationale- Nederlanden, the insurance arm of Internationale Nederlanden Group, in consultation with the board of directors of The Orion Insurance Company PLC and Orion Insurance (General) PLC, has decided to cease Orion's underwriting activities in the London Market for large international risks as of today.
Furthermore, Nationale-Nederlanden is engaged in negotiations for the transfer of Orion's Personal Lines and Healthcare operations to other insurance groups.
The decision is based on an analysis of Orion's prospects given its limited size in relation to the market and on the fact that further investment in the UK general insurance market is not currently one of ING Group's strategic priorities.
Nationale-Nederlanden's decision to cease its direct non-life activities in the UK will have consequences for the employment of a number of Orion's employees. Nationale-Nederlanden is aware of its social responsibility to these employees and it will act in accordance with this responsibility. Orion will continue to meet its liabilities towards its policyholders.
This decision will have no implications for the other operations of ING Group in the United Kingdom.
ING Group provides financial services through its own establishments in 44 countries. Its total assets are $166.9 billion as of March 31, 1992. Nationale-Nederlanden is represented in North American by a total of 16 life and health and property and casualty insurance companies. The NMB Postbank Group, the bank subholding of ING Group, has several branch offices in cities in the United States.
