NATIONAL STEEL, USWA REACH NEW SIX-YEAR ACCORD

MISHAWAKA, Ind., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- National Steel Corporation (NYSE: NS) and the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) announced today that they reached a tentative agreement early today on a new, six-year contract. The existing agreement was due to expire at midnight tonight.
While most of the agreement was forged by negotiating teams in Detroit, its final form was determined in face-to-face talks between National President Ronald H. Doerr and USWA President Lynn R. Williams in Pittsburgh.
No details were disclosed, pending presentation of the agreement by the union to its membership. The employees will continue to work pending ratification of the new agreement.
"We are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement in time to avoid any stoppage of work," said Mr. Doerr. "That's certainly in the best interests of both the company and its employees, as well as our customers, suppliers, shareholders and the communities in which we have plants and offices."
Mr. Williams called the proposed agreement "a package that builds upon past achievements and creates new directions that will set the pace for American labor and management relations into the next century." He said the proposal meets all the criteria of the union's bargaining goals established earlier this year to ensure the long-term job security of its members.
The USWA represents about 6,300 employees at National's two integrated steelmills, a finishing mill and its corporate headquarters. The company's total employment is approximately 10,100.
