NATIONAL SPACE SOCIETY TO HOLD ITS FIRST 'RACE FOR SPACE' EVENT

WASHINGTON, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The first Race for Space will be held Sunday, July 18, beginning at 8 a.m. The five kilometer, TAC- certified course will start at The National Air & Space Museum and will wind through the streets surrounding The National Mall.
Astronauts, politicians and NASA administrator Dan Goldin will join hundreds of space and running enthusiasts for the newest annual racing event. This year's Race for Space commemorates the 24th anniversary of the Apollo lunar landing. Buzz Aldrin, the second astronaut to walk on the moon, serves as the event's honorary co-chairman.
In addition to the five kilometer run, a one kilometer Fun Run will be held for the younger, older or less-fit crowd. WRC-TV meteorologist Bob Ryan will serve as post-race master of ceremonies. Post-race festivities will include prizes, continental breakfast for runners and music from a five-piece robot band.
The first Race for Space is being sponsored by industry partners joined together as The Delta Clipper Team. The Delta Clipper is the world's first reusable rocket, designed for vertical take-off and landing. This technology-demonstrator utilizes concepts derived from maintenance and support aspects of the airline industry to reduce the rocket's operational complexity. The first test flight of this new rocket technology is scheduled for late this summer at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
The Delta Clipper team is lead by McDonnell Douglas Aerospace and includes Pratt & Whitney, Aerojet, Harris Corporation, Honeywell, Martin Marietta, Deutsche Aerospace and SpaceGuild.
Entry forms for the Race for Space are available at Hermans Sporting Goods Stores, Giant Food Stores or by calling the National Space Society at 202-543-1900. Teams from NASA Headquarters, Goddard Space Flight Center, the Department of Defense and Congress are signing up for group competition.
Founded in 1974, the National Space Society is a non-profit membership organization established to educate the public on the importance of space exploration and development. NSS has more than 24,000 members and 130 chapters throughout the world.
