NATIONAL RAILWAY LABOR CONFERENCE CHAIRMAN ISSUES STATEMENT
 ON THE IAM ARBITRATION DECISION
WASHINGTON, July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Association of American Railroads issued the following by Charles I. Hopkins, chairman of the National Railway Labor Conference, on the IAM arbitration decision:
Arbitrator Richard Mittenthal today issued an arbitration decision which is designed to resolve the national collective bargaining dispute between the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and the nation's major freight railroads. The decision will become final unless the president rejects it within three days.
The decision was a fair and reasoned outcome that drew its essence from the parties' own deliberations. Mittenthal should be commended for mastering a series of complex issues in the limited amount of time offered by the statute. He crafted a decision that equitably balances the legitimate needs of the union, the carriers, our customers, and the public at large. Our bargaining dispute is now over, but the competitive realities that confront the railroad industry remain. To meet that challenge, we must all work together to concentrate on making our industry an increasingly competitive force in the transportation market place.
