NATIONAL PROCESSING COMPANY CONSOLIDATES CHECK OPERATIONS INTO NEW DIVISION, CREATING ONE OF LARGEST CHECK ACTIVITY DATABASES

RIVERDALE, N.J., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move that gives merchants access to one of the largest check activity databases in North America, the National Processing Company, Inc. (NPC) subsidiary of National City Corporation (NYSE: NCC) has merged its two check authorizations units and their respective files under the newly-formed Check Services Division umbrella.
The new division was formed through the combination of JBS Associates, based here, and CSS of Houston. JBS, acquired by Louisville-based NPC in February, is one of North America's largest check guarantee, verification and collection companies. CSS, acquired in 1992, also provides check guarantee, verification and collection services.
Carl J. Williams, president and CEO of JBS, will head the new Check Services Division, which will remain based at JBS's headquarters and operations center here. CSS personnel, under the direction of senior vice president Tom Recktenwald, will continue to handle certain key accounts out of Houston, where a large collections operation will remain in place. Recktenwald reports directly to Williams.
In addition, the Check Services Division will continue to operate 26 regional sales and field customer service offices that had previously been established by JBS in the U.S. and Canada. The new division employs nearly 600 people.
The consolidation of negative files created a single database with some 1.5 million names. "This affords merchants using the division's guarantee or verification programs access to one of the most extensive check activity databases in the industry," said Williams.
The newly-formed Check Services Division authorized nearly $10 billion in checks last year from approximately 100,000 merchant locations throughout North America, including retailers, auto dealers, hotels, mail order houses and restaurants. Accounts include such names as Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Macy's, Home Depot, Merry-Go-Round Enterprises and L.L. Bean. Additionally, check collection services are provided to such chains as Toys `R' Us, Marshall's and Caldor.
Williams added that the Check Services Division's sales force will begin to

market NPC's bankcard processing services to existing JBS accounts. NPC, one of the nation's largest merchant credit card processors, services some 150,000 merchant locations, including such major retailers as Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target Stores, Mervyn's, American Stores and Walgreens.
"This is a major step in the mutual objective of Check Services and NPC to offer our merchant customers a full line of non-cash, point-of- sale transaction services; checks, bankcard and debit cards," said Williams.
NPC has annual revenues of approximately $250 million. The company employs 4,000 people in 12 offices across the U.S. Its parent, National City, is a $29 billion diversified financial services company headquartered in Cleveland. National City operates banks and other financial service subsidiaries, principally in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
