NATIONAL GYPSUM COMPANY TO REDUCE WORKFORCE

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- National Gypsum Company (NASDAQ-NMS: NGCO), which emerged from Chapter 11 in July, will further reduce its salaried and hourly workforce by approximately 12 percent. National Gypsum employs a total of some 3,000 personnel. The majority of reductions are expected to become effective before year end.
The reductions are expected to produce annual pre-tax savings of approximately $30 million. The company expects a one-time charge related to the reductions of approximately $4.5 million.
The reductions are part of a reorganization of the company that began in January 1990 to effect its operating strategy of becoming the absolute, lowest-cost producer of the preferred products, quality and services, as determined by its customers. The company previously reduced its salaried and hourly population by approximately 25 percent since 1990.
The company believes that success in a highly cyclical commodity business, such as gypsum wallboard, requires that it be a low-cost producer. In addition to being fully integrated, the company is further reducing costs and improving quality and efficiency through aggressive process improvement.
National Gypsum Company is the nation's second largest manufacturer and distributor of gypsum wallboard and related products.
