ISSUES STATEMENT ON FOREST SERVICE APPROPRIATIONS FOR FISCAL 1993
WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was issued by National Forest Products Association (NFPA) Vice President Frank Gladics in response to action today in the Senate on Forest Service appropriations for fiscal 1993:
"The approval of the amendment by Wyche Fowler, D-Ga., concerning the Forest Service timber sale appeals process shows that he and his supporters are completely out of touch with the concerned public on this issue.
"Their action flew in the face of an outflow of public comments that favored the new appeals process by a four-to-one margin. The Forest Service received 24,600 comments on its proposed appeal rule, the most ever received by the agency on a rule-making. More than 19,000 of the comments received supported the agency.
"Fortunately, a bi-partisan group of senators, led by Larry Craig, R-Idaho, Dennis DeConcini, D-Ariz., Pete Domenici, R-N.M., Conrad Burns, R-Mont., Ted Stevens, R-Alaska and Frank Murkowski, R-Alaska, introduced and achieved passage of a perfecting amendment which reduced the negative impact of Fowler's misguided attempt to heap more pain and suffering on the rural communities of the United States.
"Fowler's effort today, coupled with his unsuccessful attempt last night to stop below cost sales off national forests, makes one thing clear: he wants to lock up all national forests to timber harvesting.
"It also makes clear that the Senate is not willing to entertain job-killing amendments, such as those offered by Mr. Fowler, at a time when employment losses throughout the economy are mounting."
