NATIONAL EDUCATION CORP. ELECTS PAUL B. MacCREADY AS DIRECTOR
IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- David C. Jones, chairman of the board of directors of National Education Corp. (NYSE: NEC) today announced that inventor and aviation pioneer Paul MacCready has been elected to the company's board of directors.
According to Jones, MacCready became internationally known in 1977 as the "father of human-powered flight" when his Gossamer Condor made the first sustained, controlled flight by a heavier-than-air craft powered solely by its pilot's muscles. In 1979, his Gossamer Albatross was peddled across the English Channel to win the largest cash prize in aviation history. Jones said that MacCready's myriad of inventions and firsts have earned him the designation as the Engineer of the Century by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and, in turn, make him an ideal selection as a director of the nation's leading technical education and training company.
MacCready is well known to the business community as well, as founder and chairman of Southern California-based AeroVironment Inc., an engineering services and think-tank organization, whose successes range from aeronautics to air quality consulting, hazardous waste disposal and electric-powered vehicles for air and land. AeroVironment's work on the Sunraycer, a solar-powered car that won the 1987 Race Across Australia, was so successful that it led General Motors Corp. to acquire a shareholder interest in the company.
Jones added that MacCready's accomplishments would fill volumes but that his real contribution to National Education Corp. would be his commitment to education and his reputation as a leader in education and industry in emphasizing creativity and the development of broad-thinking skills.
Jones said that MacCready's leadership strengths, commitment to education and worldwide recognition will be of demonstrable benefit to National Education as it moves to direct the course of education and training into the next century.
MacCready's professional affiliations include the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Meteorological Society.
