NATIONAL COMPUTER SYSTEMS REPORTS THIRD QUARTER RESULTS

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 19 ~PRNewswire~ -- National Computer Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: NLCS) (NCS) today reported revenues of $73,719,000 for the third quarter of 1992 ended Oct. 31, an increase of 3.7 percent from $71,067,000 a year ago. Net income for the third quarter declined 6.8 percent to $3,753,000 or $.23 per share, from $4,027,000 or $.25 per share last year.
For the first nine months, revenues totaled $214,054,000, which were basically flat with revenues of $213,231,000 in the year-earlier period. Net income for the current nine-month period rose to $10,130,000 or $.63 per share from $9,506,000 or $.59 per share a year ago.
Charles W. Oswald, NCS' chairman and chief executive officer, commented, "NCS' third quarter sales were below expectations, which affected our earnings for this period."
He said, "Sales of important new products, including our imaging system and school administration software, have not developed as quickly as planned due to the persistently weak economy and the longer selling cycles associated with these complex systems. As a result of these factors, several key sales anticipated for the third quarter have been delayed. In addition, third quarter results were affected by sluggish scanner sales in Europe due to soft economic conditions there." Oswald added, "We also incurred higher sales and marketing costs in the third quarter. Throughout 1992, we have been strengthening NCS' sales organization as a necessary step for spurring new product sales. We expect to realize the growing benefit of these investments during 1993."
NCS is an information services company serving the education, business, financial and professional assessment markets. The company's common stock is traded on the National Market System under the NASDAQ symbol NLCS.
