 NATIONAL CITY CORPORATION SELECTS NCR
 FOR STRATEGIC IMAGING PARTNERSHIP
CLEVELAND, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- National City Corporation (NYSE: NCC), a $29 billion bank holding company based in Cleveland, and NCR Corporation announced today that they will begin a strategic partnership to test NCR's Scalable Image Item Processing System (SIIPS).
SIIPS is an image-based proof of deposit (POD) check processing system which automatically scans and reads checks and other documents. The system uses specialized transport and Character Amount Recognition (CAR) technologies, developed by NCR, to provide a cost-effective approach to image item processing. CAR technology allows the system to automatically read handwritten numbers on documents.
"Our partnership with NCR gives National City the potential to reduce the cost structure of our already high-quality, high-productivity proof and encoding operations," said Jon L. Gorney, senior vice president of information services and operations of National City Corporation. "NCR's SIIPS should provide a cost-effective solution compared to the other products in the marketplace."
National City Corporation will be testing the NCR SIIPS system at their Columbus, Ohio operations center as part of the "NCR Image Technology Validation Program." The partnership program will last approximately one year. NCR will be training the bank's operators to handle the new image-based POD processing functions including: document preparation; image capture; image keying; image balancing and power encoding.
Testing at National City Corporation will include these steps:
-- Document preparation, image and data capture, image-based
 amount entry
 -- Automatic character recognition
-- Basic balancing, character amount recognition, power
 encode
-- Courtesy amount verification, full balancing,
 reconciliation
-- High volume systems tests, Check Processing Control
 System interface
The partnership will allow National City Corporation and NCR to further validate this system. The partnership program will also verify, in a live environment, that key system components and technologies are compatible with the cost justification objectives for the system.
NCR's SIIPS is unique in the industry in that it offers a highly scalable, open systems architecture approach to image item processing. The system is based on NCR's System 3000 family of general purpose computers, complemented by new, NCR developed image technologies to provide superior flexibility and lower cost.
To complement the price and performance advantages of the NCR System 3000-based SIIPS architecture, NCR developed the NCR 7780, a document transport system that is specifically designed for imaging. The transport provides superior document handling and scalability at a lower cost per document. The NCR 7780 can be configured as both an image capture transport and a power encoder so that both functions can be performed on the same transport. This design approach allows the SIIPS system to address a wide range of POD processing volumes in both centralized and distributed processing environments.
"The partnership program with National City Corporation demonstrates that NCR has a differentiated approach to imaging that will provide superior value to our customers," said Raymond Miolla, vice president of NCR's Financial Systems Division. "The open system design of SIIPS should reduce check processing costs and provide financial institutions with image solutions that they can match to their operations environments as opposed to the system dictating the environment."
NCR's System 3000, a key component of SIIPS, is a seven-level family of general-purpose, scalable, microprocessor-based computer systems that span a performance range from 2.6 MIPS to more than 100,000 MIPS.
National City Corporation is a $29 billion diversified financial services company headquartered in Cleveland. National City operates banks and other financial service subsidiaries principally in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
NCR, an AT&T Co., develops, manufactures, markets, supports and services enterprise-wide information systems for worldwide markets.
