NATIONAL BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD ASSOCIATION ELECTS
ANDY CZAJKOWSKI CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota today was elected chairman of the board of the national Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). The BCBSA is the national coordinating body for the country's independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans. Together, these plans serve more than 70 million Americans.
Andrew P. Czajkowski, 56, was elected chairman of the BCBSA board of directors at the board's annual meeting held in Atlanta. He replaces Thomas A. Rose, president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, who had served as chairman since 1988.
Czajkowski will continue in his role as president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (BCBSM), while assuming leadership of the board.
"The nation's Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans will benefit greatly from the demonstrated commitment and leadership of Mr. Czajkowski," said Bernard R. Tresnowski, BCBSA president and CEO. "The kind of innovation and creative problem solving that the Minnesota plan has demonstrated under his direction is absolutely critical to our organization as we take a leading role in charting the course of the nation's health care system."
The BCBSA board of directors consists of presidents from virtually every Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan in the nation. It is responsible for a number of functions, including the development of BCBSA positions on key national health care issues, the supervision of BCBSA administrative activities and the protection of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield service marks used throughout the country by member plans and their affiliates.
As chairman, Czajkowski also will head the board's executive committee, a 26-member body consisting of Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan presidents and CEOs.
Czajkowski became president of BCBSM in January 1983 -- 17 years after joining the company. Under his direction as president, BCBSM has increased its membership by 24 percent and gained national recognition for its innovative product designs, managed care initiatives, data collection systems and strong financial position. Today, the company serves more than 1.7 million people and offers a wide variety of health coverage products, including preferred provider organizations, health maintenance organizations and point-of-service plans.
The BCBSA is the national coordinating body for the nation's 73 independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans. Together, these plans are the country's largest group of private health care financiers.
