NATIONAL BEVERAGE OPERATING INCOME...UP

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- National Beverage Corp. (NASDAQ: POPS) today announced continued income growth for the fiscal year ended May 1, 1993 as operating income of $21.6 million grew 8 percent over the prior year's operating income of $20 million. Revenues for fiscal year 1993 were $332.6 million compared to $340.8 million for fiscal year 1992. Income before adjustments related to National Beverage's investment in affiliate was $8.1 million compared to $6.8 million for the prior year.
"Much of the decline in revenues this year is a result of the company's decision to maintain a more practical promotional philosophy," stated Nick A. Caporella, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, "and also reporting periods differed somewhat," he added. "The company's previously announced Mario flavor program to initiate its move into the kids beverage category began mid-April and did not significantly contribute to fiscal year 1993 revenues or operating income," Caporella continued.
The company also announced that it has delayed the filing of its Annual Report on Form 10-K for fiscal year ended May 1, 1993 in order to assess the carrying value of its investment in affiliate, which recently reported a $9.3 million loss for fiscal year 1993. As a result of the reported loss of the affiliate's earnings, the company plans to evaluate its long-term strategy and carrying value of its investment and thus is unable to report net income or earnings per share results at this time. The company expects to file its 10-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission promptly after this determination is made.
National Beverage serves as a holding company for various operating subsidiaries that manufacture, market and distribute its full line of cola and multi-flavored branded soft drinks and bottled water: Shasta(R), Faygo(R), Body Works(R), a Sante(R), Spree(R), and 8 oz. Kid Cans(TM). The company's subsidiaries, through their 12 strategically located manufacturing facilities, also bottle soft drinks for retail grocery chains, wholesalers and other soft drink companies.
