NATIONAL BEVERAGE LAUNCHES AMERICA'S FIRST SOFT DRINK JUST FOR KIDS

-- Special 8 oz. Kid Cans(TM) Soft Drinks Made in Four Fun Fruit
Flavors Named For Super Mario Bros.(R) Nintendo(R) Characters --
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Kids are getting a soft drink to call their own in four fun, fruity and colorful flavors named after Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. characters and packed in 8-oz. Kid Cans(TM) four-packs sized just for them.
National Beverage Corp., the maker of Shasta(R) and Faygo(R), is launching the vitamin C-enriched line of carbonated soft drinks nationally this month to coincide with the release of Disney's Buena Vista Pictures' new "Super Mario Bros." movie on Memorial Day weekend.
"Kids six to 16 years old drink 22.5 percent of the soft drinks consumed in America. And half of them choose their own soft drinks. It's high time for a product just for them packaged in Kid Cans(TM) packages sized for their thirsts," said National Beverage's Chairman and CEO Nick A. Caporella.
National Beverage's research with kids shows they love the flavors and colors, and most (70 percent to 78 percent) want their parents to buy all four flavors. Their mothers are happy to oblige: 79 percent say they will buy Kid Cans(TM) soft drinks once a month. Almost all say they will buy more than one flavor.
"Cable TV's Nickelodeon gives kids exactly what they want to watch, and we're giving kids what they want to drink," Caporella said.
A market leader in fruit-flavored soft drinks, National Beverage has formulated four colorful caffeine-free flavors especially for kids' tastes. The varieties include: Mario Punch (red), Luigi Berry (blue), Princess Toadstool Cherry (pink), and Yoshi Apple (green). The Nintendo namesakes of these flavors are among the most recognized characters today in the six to 16 age group, even more so than Mickey Mouse or Ronald McDonald.
The debut of Kid Cans(TM) will be supported by an instant-win sweepstakes. Kids and their families can win thousands of prizes, including a grand-prize seven-day trip for four to Japan, 30 Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems(R); 100 NES Super Scope 6 systems(R); 2,000 Mario watches; and 4,000 Mario T-shirts.
National Beverage's Shasta(R) and Faygo(R) brands will also participate in the sweepstakes, with imprints inside 12-oz. cans and 2- liter bottles.
National Beverage serves as a holding company for operating subsidiaries that manufacture, market, and distribute colas and multi- flavored soft drinks and bottled waters under the following brands: Shasta(R), Faygo(R), Body Works(R), a Sante(R), and Spree(R). Through its 12 strategically located manufacturing facilities, the company also bottles soft drinks for retail grocery chains, wholesalers and other soft drink companies.
