NATION'S TOP LAW FIRMS JOIN NATIONAL UNION
PANEL COUNSEL TO REPRESENT D&O INSUREDS
NEW YORK, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, a member company of American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG), announced today that as an enhancement to its Directors & Officers (D&O) Liability insurance, a team of attorneys from the nation's top law firms have been assembled to provide the best possible litigation defense for D&O policyholders.
The panel counsel consists of 43 law firms in nine cities who are the country's most well-known and qualified firms in handling securities litigation and claims of corporate mismanagement.
Commenting on the program, National Union President William D. Smith said, "The panel is comprised of law firms that have demonstrated extraordinary ability in the defense of corporate directors and officers. We are very pleased to be able to secure such a prestigious group of litigation defense firms for our insureds."
D&O insurance, of which AIG is the leading underwriter in the United States, protects directors and officers from the consequences of legal actions taken against them by shareholders, creditors, employees or others as a result of negligent acts or omissions or misleading statements. AIG companies have been providing D&O coverage for over 25 years.
"The firms taking part are the most experienced in handling these complex type of suits. Knowing they are available should help alleviate many of the concerns that face corporate directors and officers," said Smith.
The panel counsel is divided into nine metropolitan regions throughout the United States: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington. National Union D&O insureds will be entitled to select a firm from the three to six firms in each of the nine cities, depending on where the lawsuit is filed. Should litigation be brought in a location other than one of the nine cities, National Union will provide a list of no less than three firms drawn from the closest locations serviced by the program. In addition, local counsel will selected to assist the defense counsel where appropriate.
According to Barry H. Garfinkel, senior litigation partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, "Directors and officers have increasingly become targets of litigation over the past years. These are frequently highly complex cases with very large stakes. By taking advantage of the experienced legal counsel available through the program, directors and officers know they are well-protected in any litigation."
AIG is the leading U.S.-based international insurance organization and the largest underwriter of commercial and industrial insurance in the United States. Its member companies write property, casualty, marine, life and financial services insurance in approximately 130 countries and jurisdictions, and are also engaged in range of financial services businesses. American International Group, Inc.'s common stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, as well as the stock exchanges in London, Paris, Switzerland and Tokyo.
