NATION'S FIRST NATURAL GAS TAXIS OFFER WASHINGTONIANS FREE SERVICE; PROTEST OF DISTRICT'S TAXI CAB COMMISSION CONTINUES

WASHINGTON, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- In another move to protest the District of Columbia Taxi Cab Commission's treatment of the Clean Air Cab Company, the D.C.-based company announced it will be offering free taxi cab service to the residents of the District. The fleet of six natural gas powered cars, which first applied to the D.C. Office of Taxis in August of 1992 for an operating license, is providing the transportation to protest the indecisiveness and the anti-competitive behavior of the District's Taxi Cab Commission to grant Clean Air Cab's operating authority without conditions other than compliance with the general rules and regulations that apply to all taxi companies.
The company has been told by the commissioners to remove "Powered By Natural Gas" as well as the telephone number on the rear of the car. The commission has also demanded that the company's logo of "Clouds" and "Flame" be stripped off immediately.
"We have fixed cost, whether the cabs are on or off the street. The public can now experience an environmentally correct service and send a strong message to D.C. government that these anti-competitive practices of the Taxi Cab Commission will not be tolerated in our nation's capital," said Todd Ruelle, president of the company.
Clean Air Cab Company, the nation's first natural gas cab fleet, was launched on Earth Day, April 24, 1992. The company participated in President Clinton's inauguration parade, and provided transportation for the Presidential Inaugural Headquarters. Vice President Gore, the secretaries of energy and transportation and EPA's administrator are among the many who have appealed to District of Columbia Mayor Sharon Pratt-Kelly to get the cars on the street.
