NASPE AND KINDERCARE TEAM UP TO OFFER MOVEMENT VIDEO IN LEARNING CENTERS; 100,000 PRESCHOOLERS TO BENEFIT FROM FUN FITNESS PROGRAM

MONTGOMERY, Ala., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Designed to spark a joy and appreciation for physical movement and activity that will last throughout their lives, a series of movement videos, specially tailored for preschool children ages three to five, is being offered by KinderCare Learning Centers as part of its developmentally appropriate curriculum in 1,225 centers nationwide. While experts like Arnold Schwarzenneger are increasing parents' awareness for the importance of making exercise a family affair, KinderCare, the nation's largest child care company, in partnership with the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), is the first to introduce movement into the education process with fun, entertaining and imaginative activities.
Entitled Let's Move, Let's Play! this unique program will soon be introduced to 100,000 KinderCare children in time for Physical Fitness and Sport Month (May 1993) -- and to NASPE's professional physical education and sport membership of 25,000. This is NASPE's first major project directed to preschoolers.
The Let's Move, Let's Play! package includes a three segment participation video for children, a staff training video, and an activities handbook for teachers of young children. The package is designed to aid teachers of young children in addressing the physical development needs of preschool children in a "developmentally appropriate" fashion.
Besides being developmentally appropriate, what sets this age appropriate video apart from other fitness videos on the market is the special role that it will play educationally. Using imaginary play, center directors and teachers can incorporate "moon traveling astronauts" or "farmers driving tractors" that motivate children to move in fun ways and to develop socially, emotionally, and intellectually. Preschoolers delight in the process of imagination, physical movement and activity!
Philosophically, NASPE's new partnership with KinderCare demonstrates both organizations' goals to set the foundation for quality physical education and movement at an early age. NASPE is the only national association devoted exclusively to improving the total sport and physical education experience in the United States. KinderCare embraces whole child development throughout its curriculum, which is based on fulfilling the intellectual, social, emotional and physical needs of children.
"Most children are not getting enough quality physical education to understand how and why they should keep themselves physically active and fit throughout their lifetimes," said Judith C. Young, Ph.D., executive director, NASPE. "Among five to eight year-olds, forty-nine percent have significant cardiac risk factors like obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and inactive lifestyles. We are confident that the Let's Move, Let's Play! project is an important first step in reversing this alarming trend."
The new movement video for preschoolers reinforces KinderCare's philosophy that the foundation for all learning -- including physical, mental and social -- begins in preschool years. According to Marcy Guddemi, Ph.D., vice president of Education and Research for KinderCare, "Children who are physically fit tend to be academically successful and have a positive self-image. Our new physical activity video is an excellent, developmentally appropriate vehicle for encouraging preschoolers to participate in physical fitness/movement activities that are fun."
For information on how to purchase the Let's Move, Let's Play! video, parents and other child caregivers can call NASPE at 800-321-0789.
