NASA AWARDS CONTRACT TO ENERGY RESEARCH CORPORATION TO DESIGN DIRECT FUEL CELL POWER PLANT

DANBURY, Conn., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Energy Research Corporation (NASDAQ: ERCC, BSE: ERC) has been awarded a $4,737,350 two-year contract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to design a prototype 32-kilowatt direct fuel cell power plant, with fuel cells to be manufactured at the company's production facility in Torrington, Connecticut.
The program is funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and is managed by the NASA Lewis Research Center.
While ERC is currently designing and testing natural gas and coal-gas powered fuel cell power plants, this program will focus on a facility powered by commonly used military fuels, including diesel and jet fuels. The fuel cell's ability to provide efficient, quiet and environmentally benign electric power may be advantageous for military bases and tactical deployment in remote, bare-base locations. This program's goal is to determine the viability of fuel cell power plants for both applications.
Also of interest to the military is the fuel cell's ability to provide distributed power, where multiple, smaller power plants complement larger, centrally located stations. Additional ARPA criteria for the project include transportability, durability and minimal noise emissions. Ultimately, this program could result in the construction of bare-base and fixed-base demonstrations, the latter in the two-megawatt size range.
ERC's direct fuel cells are environmentally benign as a result of their electrochemical operation. Fuel cells do not burn fuel like a typical electrical generator. Instead, the fuel reacts electrochemically with oxygen in the air to produce electricity and heat in a single step process. Because this process is so efficient, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced. Since there is no combustion, pollution-causing oxides of nitrogen are virtually nonexistent. Sulfur dioxide, an acid rain component, is also essentially eliminated.
Energy Research Corporation, located in Danbury and Torrington, Connecticut, is commercializing highly efficient and environmentally benign electric power generation equipment for utilities using its Direct Fuel Cell technology. ERC also develops advanced storage batteries for commercial and defense applications.
