NARROW FORMAT LASER PLOTTER FROM XEROX ENGINEERING SYSTEMS SUPPORTS ADOBE POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 2

ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- A high-speed, narrow- format laser plotter that offers Adobe PostScript Level 2 printing was announced today by Xerox Engineering Systems.
The Xerox 8812 Laser Plotter has an embedded RISC-based controller that increases plotting speed and continuous throughput by as much as three times over its predecessor, the Xerox 8810. Up to 15 A-size and eight B-size plots from D- and E-size engineering drawings can be produced in one minute. The resolution of the output is 400 points per inch (ppi).
The 8812 also addresses the need for desktop publishing capabilities. With the push of a button, it offers PostScript Level 2 printing. It is the first laser plotter to result from the partnership between Xerox and Adobe Systems to incorporate PostScript into Xerox products. The 8812 has a true Adobe PostScript Level 2 interpreter with more than 51 resident Adobe Type 1 typefaces standard.
All industry-standard data formats for CAD output are supported by the 8812. These include Versatec V-80, CalComp 906/907, HP-GL and HP-GL2 (including AutoCAD HP-GL2).
"Plotter products traditionally have supported CAD language emulations while printer products have supported PostScript," said Barry R. Lathan, vice president and general manager, plotter products, Xerox Engineering Systems. "The 8812 is the first to combine the features of both. It's two output devices for the price of one."
The 8812 is available in one-, two- and three-tray models. Each model is available with or without Adobe PostScript Level 2 printing. On all models, plots can be output onto A- and B-size plain paper, polyester film, tracing paper, transparencies and letterhead. The toner cartridge is good for up to 10,000 pages.
RS-232C serial, Centronics, VPI high-speed parallel and AppleTalk interfaces are standard on the 8812, AppleTalk being active through the PostScript option. Windows and Apple Macintosh drivers and Adobe Type Manager also are standard. A direct network connection for TCP/IP and Novell is available as an option. Together with the 8812, this network solution provides 100 percent automatic data format switching.
Additional features of the 8812 include a built-in 3.5-inch floppy disk drive and optional 120MB hard disk drive for storing downloaded Type 1 fonts, forms and patterns. Standard RAM provision is 8MB, upgradable to 16MB.
The 8812 laser plotter is available immediately worldwide from the Xerox Engineering Systems direct sales force and through authorized Xerox dealers. Prices for the 8812 range from $5,995 to $8,495.
The 8812 is covered under the Xerox Total Satisfaction Guarantee when a Maintenance Agreement is in effect. Under the guarantee, customers decide for themselves whether the product is performing to their satisfaction. If they are not satisfied, Xerox will replace the capabilities -- up to three years from the date of delivery.
Xerox Engineering Systems is the world's largest supplier of engineering copiers, wide-format plotters and fax machines, raster plotters and engineering document management systems.
