NAILBA Adopts 7-Point Strategic Plan.

Jim Sorebo, the 2017 chairman of the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies, kicked off the NAILBA 36 conference today in Hollywood, Florida, by donning the kind of helmet worn in his favorite movie, "300."

As Dilios delivered his epic speech from the film, on a large video screen hanging above the podium, Sorebo dubbed in his own words -- a call to action for all in attendance.

Sorebo told attendees that the insurance industry has been on the defensive for too long. "There are struggles and challenges around every corner facing our industry," he said.

Those challenges include the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), a low interest rate environment, and the lack of new blood in the advisory and agent ranks, just to name a few, Sorebo said.

Instead of sitting back and waiting to find out what else will happen, and what other impediments will appear, it's time to go on offense, Sorebo said.

For NAILBA, going on the offense means adopting a new strategic plan.

Sorebo listed seven key elements of the new plan.

1.

Enhancing relevancy for NAILBA members, vendor and carrier partners.

2.

Growing membership and revenue.

3.

Improving marketing and communication.

4.

Strengthening carrier and independent marketing organization (IMO) relationships.

5.

Developing a stronger advocacy arm.

6.

Enhancing education capabilities.

7.

Collaborating with other associations and organizations creating a single, powerful voice.

Sorebo brought new NAILBA Chief Executive Officer Dan LaBert on stage to talk about the new plan.

LaBert took over the top spot at NAILBA after the former head, Jack Chiasson, stepped down earlier this year. Chiasson had been leading the association for 13 years and helped develop the new strategy.

LaBert, who has more than 20 years of association experience, including a post as the leader of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney, has also been the president of FWA Consultants, a booking agency that has helped clients connect with retired military officers for a wide variety of engagements. While in that role, he learned leadership skills and strategies from military heroes, including Gen. Anthony Zinni, Gen. John Kelly and Gen. James Mattis.

LaBert told the crowd to get ready for change as NAILBA begins its offensive. "Change is coming," he said. "We are committed to creating a new path for the organization, but we are also committed to preserving the integrity of the past."
