NAB has an important role to curb corruption: PM.

ISLAMABAD -- Prime Minister, Justice (retired) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso Monday underlined that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has an important role to play in stemming corruption.

The Prime Minister said this during a presentation made by the NAB chairman Admiral (retired) Fasih Bukhari at the Prime Minister's Secretariat. The NAB chairman apprised that in absolute terms, Pakistan had been rated between 2.3 to 2.7 in the International Corruption Perception Index (ICPI) since the introduction of Index by the Transparency in the year 1995.

Such indication showed that the level of corruption had remained unchanged in Pakistan irrespective of the nature and dispensation of government in the country, he added. The chairman said during the last five months, NAB has reviewed projects and procurements worth Rs.1.5 trillion at their initial stages, leading to prevention of corruption of an estimated amount of Rs 200 billion.

Fasih Bukhari said that the Bureau's focus was now more on measures to prevent corruption which would save it from indulging into complex procedures for prosecution of corruption cases. He further said the Bureau now feels that it should be restructured with a view to strengthening its legal and administrative expertise to control economic crimes by allowing it to benefit from resources available in other federal departments.

The chairman NAB also proposed that the Rule of Business might be amended by placing the Bureau under the Cabinet Division which would ensure its independence.

The Prime Minister issued directions that the proposals put forwarded by the NAB chairman be examined in detail and put up to him at the earliest.

Senior officials of NAB and Prime Minister's Secretariat also attended the briefing.
